Gigging flounder???

Post by Hit-n-Miss »

When I was a kid my dad took us gigging when we lived in Jacksonville. We started with a washtub floated with an inner tube. Holding the battery and ice. We had hand held underwater lights and gigs. We moved up the a johnboat with a pulpit on the deck and underwater lights and much longer gigs. I have not done it in years and would probably have to do this 1st method as my Kenner drafts too much for gigging. But I do have and Old Town canoe we could use. Tethered to us and wade. Does anyone have good areas that you could tell me about to gig flounder? Anywhere from Keaton to Lanark that would be good for wading and will have flounder. Thanks.

I gigged 427 flounder in 2013.

Buy my rig and I'll tell you how to fill the boat.
Comes with everything but motor and generator.

Kind of hoping I would not have to buy a new boat. Gonna make do with what I have. But any tips would help. :-D

I kayaked around Bottoms Rd this Saturday afternoon and saw quite a few jon boats set up for gigging waiting to launch when I was loading my gear. Also have seen guys setting up around that floating in Franklin County on 98. I've caught flounder around Ochlocknee and Mashes Sands area. I'll step on a flounder all the time wading Bald Point and AGP. That whole area looks great for gigging, and have heard guys doing well at Wakulla Beach.

My buddies tried it a few times in their Gheenoe, but it seems their limiting factor is lumens. They were always complaining about not being able to illuminate the water enough. The more convincing set ups I've seen run generators for some serious lights.

Have to have good lights to be successful consistently.

Calm, clearer water best.

6"-3' of water but usually shallow 1-2' is better.

If you are in the bait, fish are near.

They look like this underwater

They look like this out of the water.

Some nights you settle for whats biting.

I have only found them at St Marks, Oyster Bay, Panacea, Lanark, Carrabelle, Indian Pass and St Joe Bay.

Turn volume down and enjoy my video.
