Micro Guide Rod / Leader Knot Question -

Post by Steve Stinson »

I haven't fished a lot of micro guide rods, but I won a spinning rod made by "Hooked" rod company at the CCA Banquet last week and fished with it for the first time on Saturday over near St. George Isl. I really like the rod - great backbone, with a fast tip, but I don't like the way my leader knot catches the guides when I cast.

I am currently using 15 lb braid with a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader tied with a surgeon's knot. If any of you know a knot that would give me less diameter, please post it here. The only solution I see is to shorten my leader and cast with the knot outside of the rod guides.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Red Phillips knot or a Z knot are the 2 I use with the same set-up. Have fished microguides for years. You will like them.

I used to use a spider hitch loop to an improved Bristol knot, worked well enough.

Nowadays I use the FG knot.

I still prefer the double uni connection, with four wraps of the leader and seven with the braid. I'm using 10-pound braid, but it makes a small, tight barrel knot that goes through my small guides easily. Don't have micro guides, though. Haven't had any failures with those knots if they are moistened first and carefully tied.

Double uni is my main line to line knot, but doesn't work well on my rod w micro eyes. The knot is a little too big
