A shout out to some friendly scallopers
A big thank you for giving me a ride today when the anchor pulled loose on my boat while in steinhatchee today. I started the morning off loosing my partner and failing to convince my wife to play hookie today so I was scalloping by myself. Then Ihad boat trouble at the ramp. But that ride was much appreciated, it made my day better and I have some scallops to show for my work. I went scalloping on a day trip today to celebrate passing my oral comprehensive exams for my PhD.

Not a good feeling to pop up and realize you boat has floated off. Good deal you got a lift. So how was the scalloping?

I have started swimming down and hand setting the anchor. Because just throwing it out. It sometimes does not bite through the grass.

It was pretty good, they weren't as thick as I saw them in Keaton last year but this was my first time going south, I always fish and scallop to the north. Problem was the area had a soft bottom and it just pulled the grass and mud up and that was all she wrote. I shouldn't have scalloped back to the boat but I didn't think it was moving that fast. But, it ended fine and I learned a way back to the river channel a little closer in. I hope to go back tomorrow, but that depends on weather.

x2 on setting the anchor by hand. And when scalloping with no one left in the boat, the capt. should always stay downwind of the boat so if the anchor pulls the boat will float to him & not away from him. Same when scalloping alone. Always a good idea to leave a floating rope behind the boat as well. If someone gets in trouble or the boat slips away, you don't have to get all the way to the boat to catch it.
