New danger sign where the sunken barge is in St. Mark's chan
I've often wondered how many people hit those steel posts right off the lighthouse. They're exposed at low tide but just under water at mid and high tide in a fairly well traveled area. Glad to see it.

Are you talking about the one right out from the lighthouse channel?

If u are talking about the one in front of the chanel that bman is pointing out. It can be a disaster waiting to happen. I see so many boat fly across there and I use to one of them.Ted in Tallahassee wrote:I've often wondered how many people hit those steel posts right off the lighthouse. I assume you are talking about the shipwreck at "Spanish Hole". Just to the the South of where the Lighthouse channel intersects the main St. Marks channel.
Info on the wreck. http://www.thewakullanews.com/content/wreck-dispatch https://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/SpanishHole.pdf
When I was a teenager the boiler tank and more of the hull was visible. Even though tide and time have worn it away it's still more substantial than a "couple of steel post". To my knowledge there has not been any kind of marker or sign there for at least 40 years.
A guy I know hit it in his flats skiff a few years ago. Threw his passenger into the water at 30 mph. Luckily injuries were minor as I remember. Lots of things can happen in a boat. Many of them are bad and some life threatening. Be careful out there.

Yeah bman that's it. It was there Saturday (two days ago) but wasn't there last Saturday. Who knows maybe it's already been knocked down, LOL.bman wrote:Are you talking about the one right out from the lighthouse channel?

We eyeballed that new sign yesterday. It reads DANGER and some small print that you would have had to have already hit the wreck to read. lol
We both remarked that its a miracle somebody hasn't hit that and been killed over the years. The sign is definitely new.

That sign needs to be about five times bigger.

Thanks for the history lesson, rockyg.
I'd always wondered what that wreck was about.
Nice work by the guy who pulled the doomed boat out of the channel before it sank.
And salvaged for scrap for the WWII effort. Interesting.
