Looney Poons

Post by LucWilliams »

Fished yesterday out of the Lighthouse and it was a very strange day. Having fished the NFGFC tourney Saturday, my girlfriend Savannah and I elected to sleep in and go a little later. We started out sight fishing but it was high tide and seeing fish was a challenge. Caught a little bit of live bait and hit 4 different live bait spots since sight fishing wasn't happening..only yielded one short trout. All of these spots have been producing for the last month or so, so we were a little discouraged running to our next spot.

Savannah is quite the fisherwoman, she has mastered sight fishing reds, tailing reds, topwater plugging, twitchbaits.. The one thing she hasn't done a lot of is tarpon fishing. We took her a couple days this summer but those days were unproductive so she's never even hooked one.

As we pulled into our next spot and got anchored up, I saw a tarpon roll. This was in a creek where I would never expect tarpon, and we kept seeing them roll 2 at a time in the deep hole. We dropped our live baits in and no matter what kind of baitfish we put out, we only caught catfish. She caught 4 in a row and then I rigged her with our only small croaker.

That's when she set the hook into her first tarpon! It gave her several good jumps and a great fight. We snapped some pics boat side and let her swim back into the deep hole, it was awesome.

As we idled into the lighthouse canal I pulled my keys out to put them in my pocket and dropped them straight into the lighthouse canal. Pops came down and we took him out to reward him for his drive to bring us the keys. We managed 2 slot reds and one slot trout. Some storms rolled in and the wind went from 0 to about 40 knots in a matter of seconds. Bumpy ride home and a very interesting day!

Congratulations to Savannah on her first tarpon! That is a perfect size. Plenty of spunk but not enough omph to wear someone out.

We really need to see some high resolution shots of Savannah, though. Pretty girl and definitely a keeper, Luc.
