Auto undercoating

Post by Mister Mullet »

Is there anyplace in Tally that does undercoating? Just bought a truck and there is some rust underneath. The truck is from Michigan and has been undercoated, but two spots were missed and the road salt has caused some rust.

GO TO ANY AUTO SUPPLY STORE AND GET A CAN AND SPRAY IT ON , PROBABLY WILL NOT STOP THE RUST ESPECIALLY IF YOU UNLOAD YOUR BOAT IN SALT WATER. JUST DOUBLE SPRAY IT AND IT WILL OUTLAST YOU. I DID MY OWN IN ABOUT45 MIN. AFTER I LET IT DRY FROM PRESSURE WASHING, THAT WAS 10 YRS. AGO BUT I DID NOT HAVE ANY RUST TO START OFF WITH, STILL HAVE NO RUST.

Undercoating without getting rid of the rust will do nothing but hide the continued rusting. There are some products that convert rust and stop it. I would use that before I undercoated. PA is right, it is so easy to do now with a spray can that not many companies are doing it anymore. LineX or one of those might do it for you.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

If you take a wire brush on a drill or grinder and knock the rust off, then undercoat it you should be fine. My advice is not to buy the cheapest undercoating at the auto parts store. I use undercoating to coat my leaf springs on my boat trailers and I have notices a substantial difference in the durability of the undercoating between the cheap store brands and the better stuff made by 3M or some of the larger companies.

If you really want to stop rust, you can get some stuff called P.O.R. 15 but make sure you follow all the directions. I used this stuff on a Jeep CJ-5 frame. It works great, but is very volatile.

Thought you were going to give us a Lundergard line from the Coen Bros. movie Fargo about how undercoating is really a good deal and it comes direct from the factory.

If you don't want to tackle it yourself, LineX should be able to do a touch-up.
