St marks

Post by onefishtwofish »

Had a fun day. Took us a while to find them but when we did we made hay. Must have released 30 short BSB. not a single keeper but we stayed on them for a little while just to be sure they were all shorts. Finally found the trout and got a bonus too. Turned one rat loose. Lost many keepers or nearly keeper trout at the boat. Image

  Nicely done! That trout on the far left is a bigg'un. Missing part of his tail. Were you upriver or down close to the mouth?

At the mouth. We tried some on the flats, but nada.

It was probably 22-23" and was gut hooked. Even when my brother is in keeping mode, the big uns get a free pass ( I never keep them for myself, I only like them fried and I rarely fry fish any more - my wife does not eat fish and who wants to get the grease hot for one person). I did not even notice the tail until we were cleaning it. It fought like a redfish too.

I know what you mean about the big trout fighting like a red. I caught a 4 lb. trout in Aucilla on a big live shrimp, and I thought I had a red. He pulled like a mule!

Watched it all day Silver. It was 64-65.5 on the flats and in the main river. In the river edge, it was 65 and may have hit 66 (later in the day, tide had gone slack). I actually quit watching it once we got on the fish, but it was bumping 66 right before we got on them.

True dat. I was doing that for a while and then we got in to the BSB. Switched to the jig and got lucky and caught a trout and then a red and stayed with it. Tried the suspending in the school of trout and they would not touch it. Did not try for long as we were still catching. Some days they want what they want.

I threw a rattle trap while we were catching fish and they wouldn't touch it either. But yet they were biting almost a bare jig-head. When I cleaned them, the biggest trout(18"), had a 5" trout in his belly. Another trout had a 4" pinfish.

We did catch 2 keeper BSB out of 50 or so. Not a good ratio if your hungry.
