Tips for targeting flounder

Post by jsaunders »

I'm taking two of my uncles fishing this weekend at Steinhatchee. One of them mentioned wanting to catch flounder. I primarily fish for trout and reds, and have never specifically targeted flounder. I know I can catch them on gulp or shrimp on the bottom, but I have no idea where I'm likely to find them. In the river? In the channel? On the flats? Anyone have any tips? Not necessarily looking for anyone's secret spot, just some general guidance.

I've had good luck fishing the down current side of oyster bars for flatties. Paddle tail plastics on a jig head or spinnerbaits like the Redfish Magic are my baits of choice.

Let me know how you do this weekend...I'll be fishing Steinhatchee next week for 5-6 days!!

Thanks for the tip! I'll post a report on here Sunday. I'll shoot a PM with more details if I find out where they're hiding and what they're eating.

Big sandbar to the north of the channel that used to hold flounder. Good luck!

Drifting with a bottom bouncing rig tipped with a baitfish and a strip of croaker will work.

Don't really target them in our area, but on the east coast I know people throw mudminnows on jigheads at them in creeks. Target your typical ambush points, grass points, shell and where creeks or channels come together, also off jetties. Not sure how much help that is but I spent a week fishing st Augustine last year and there were just are many people targeting flounder as reds.

I target flounder when I'm not trout fishing. As stated, fish sand bars, oyster bars, pot holes and points and work where the sand meets the grass line. Any spot of sand in a grass bed could hold a flounder or two. A double rig will often catch two at a time. I like to use a 3" gulp on a 1/4 oz jig head on the bottom and a D.O.A. shrimp tied about 18" above the jig head. Work it like a bass lure with a slow retrieve, dragging it across the bottom.
