Nissan outboards

Post by Redbelly »

I may be buying a 40 hp soon. What is the reputation on a Nissan?

What have you heard or experienced about them?

Same exact thing as a Tohatsu. I've been very happy with my 40; as a general matter, they have a reputation as a dependable engine.

They are a very dependable engine. The only problem is there is no service center in this area that I'm aware of.
What was I supposed to do today?

Nissan = Tohatsu = Yamaha for any of the smaller engines. I think they're all manufactured by Tohatsu, so you might save yourself a few bucks by looking into them. (I think 40hp is the biggest that is manufactured for all three by Tohatsu).

My information might be out of date, as these manufacturing relationships are always changing, but it should still be fairly accurate as far as an indication of quality.

Thanks Chalk, I have been by Webster's before looking around.

I am looking at this motor tomorrow, don't know the year. An employee of mine has it, his step-father bought a boat with this motor on it

He wanted tilt&trim, so bought a brand new Merc for the boat. The previous owner of the boat offered them $1000 for the motor back.

The parents gave this motor to my worker. It has been sitting in storage for awhile. Now he will sell it to me for $675.00

Could be the beginnings of my flats boat! :D

Thanks everyone for your info 8)

Hey RB, I have a a 30 horse Nissan on a CSkiff J16- 'think it's a '01. 'Bought it used 2 years ago. Motor runs good and has never failed me, yet.
If it's no more than 5 or 6 years old, clean, and the lower unit is not beat up, too bad- I'd probably buy it. Of course after checking the compression.
Check out the specs on a new 40 horse-

Here's a link to download the manual-

Thanks goutrage.

This motor is a '96 model. I will get a buyer's check done in the next couple of days.

One feature I like is it has a pull start in addition to the lectric start....just in case.....

The motor looks real clean and not beat up at all, well taken care of. The paint on the cowel is faded a little, with some scratches.

Sounds like you got yourself a deal, if it checks out okay. My 30hp has a pull start too. I had to use it first time out back last spring, after forgetting to put a charge on the battery- Works good, lasts a long time.
Here's an online parts place, if you need anything and don't want to have to drive to get it-
http://www.onlineoutboards.com/m_contact_us.html
I ordered a SS prop, waterpump kit, and couple of other items from these folks. They seem nice enough to deal with and delivery (ground) was in 4 or 5 days.

Good luck with it.
