Alright my ole boat is puttin me through some hard times. Throughout its life has consisted of repeated burned plugs , and Ive been changin batteries more often than I care to discuss. Ive put it in the shop before but the problems have come back quickly.... this past weekend I thought I might need to call the tow-boat... I made it home, but decided to take it to "Rentz Marine" in Woodville. He had delt with it once before. I was told that the "stater" needed replacement. I was also told "it was pretty costly" anyway it comes w/ 12 month warranty (1 yr)

picked a fine time of the yr for this to happen ! Yea, Im gonna fix it, as soon as i can
Just thought Id ask if anyones delt w/ problems like this before ?? any replies will be appreciated

I first read the title I felt a tingle down below and felt nauseous

I wouldn't think burnt plugs would have anything to do with the starter and battery...Bad starter might be taking the batteries down, but having to replace them..What kind of batteries are you using? Do a search..we got on batteries here awhile back.....

Can't help you on the plugs could be a myriad of things....fuel/air mixture, valves, rings, coil, etc...........

Mako, the motor MJ has now requires a new set of plugs every year. As for batteries, the older motors don't have enough alternator output to keep up with ther power trim and tilt motor. Try using an automatic charger after every trip. Hook it up and charge the batteries as soon as you get home from every trip. If the starter is bad, you might try having Jerry's Auto Electric rebuild it. It would cost much less than a new starter. If you want to try having it rebuilt, I'll help you take the starter off.

I sure hope not. He has an OMC 120. A stator would cost more than a starter. However, if his plugs are burning, and his battery is not charging, the stator would make more sence.

Sounds like are a little confused, he did say Stator, just spelled it different.

Talked with Mako last night, and it is the "Stator", and not the "starter". I had the same response...."Starter?".Nope- .. He's looking at something like a $285 repair bill. I guess owning the older boats this type of repair comes with the territory. I've been in his boat before, and it seems that everytime he cranked it, you'd think the batteries were on their last leg.

A stator relativly simple to replace yourself and you can save a pile of $$$ doing it yourself

do you know which one ya need? I saw OMC 120, but what year is it

THE STATOR is an important part of the electrical system, both from an ignition and charging aspect. it can cause any number of problems including powerpack failures, dead batterys, intermittent and weak spark.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIP. If you suspect the stator may be a cause of electrical problems, take a closer look. Is there any discoloration of the potting compound? Cracks? Drips hanging off? Pitchlike liquid leaking out and running down the block? If any of the above symptoms are evident, toss it EVEN IF THE ELECTRICAL VALUES ARE CORRECT. It's toast. Be sure that the rectifier or rectifier/regulator is in good order as well, if it's bad it could cause a repeat failure. Also be sure the battery terminals are CLEAN and TIGHT. Loose terminals kill stators fast. If you have wing nuts on the terminals, replace them with a couple of elastic self-locking nuts.

Also, check your S/N and make sure it's a 98

***You can identify the year of the motor using the chart displayed below. If the ID number is
E115TLCO
The last two letters are C and O, which translates to 8 and 5, thus the year number on this motor is 1985

Ive read all yalls replys, and I dont drink but Im thinkin bout a few

I checked the #'s mod# J120TLETS does the ser# make any difference. an yes its a Johnson 120 (the motor says V-4) but the fella I bought the boat from said how he had rebuilt the carb or something ,so it was just a 2-cyl .

It cost me $65 to find out about this "stater" -n- another $285 if I order , and i believe he orders from Sierra #585 060 or --- 070 Somethin else bout OMC ?? Its all greek to me
