Can you spool with and successfully fish with braided line?

Post by BloodyChamp »

On a spincast reel? I’m referring to the more recent, streamlined stuff available now which is great. Some of first braided lines didn’t do well on the most updated baitcasters and spinners, let alone spincasts. I ask this with a heavy heart as I can’t find an OOP lure that I’d fished with for years until this summer when a giant Blackfish ate it. I don’t want this to happen again!

Some of the more recent spincast reels have a roller on the spinner head as opposed to a pin to guide the line onto the spool. I would think those would be better with braid, as the line would be less likely to fray and/or twist(causing wind knots).
That being said, the smaller diameter line of the same test as mono will be more likely to be tangled in the retrieve mechanism. If you use a heavier test line it might be ok.
I am assuming you are asking this due to a break off on lighter line and are wanting to go to heavier test braid. If so, I would be concerned with the reel's drag system holding up, as they are not very substantial or durable.

My lure was a tiny clear orange Rebel Crawfish. That answers the question why don’t you just use a baitcaster. The setup is small in general to as that was the best lure in this tight area with my short rod and light line. Dang dang dang...

I just bought a Daiwa Silvercast reel. Maybe that will work out. If not then I’ll spring for 1 of those high end Zebcos or something. I do hear that they are worth it but I’ve never had 1.
