A different kind of trout fishing for once

My wife won a 4h silent auction to get me a gift certificate to Blackhawk trout fishing on the soque river. I have been procrastinating about going because my original plan was to use it on the way to Bryson City for our anniversary last year and we went to the keys instead. Well after calling to find out that what I thought was a reservation date was actually the expiration date I decided to fish on Friday. Turns out my preference to fish after tropical systems move through was a brilliant idea. I arrived to find a stained river and cloudy skies with high hopes.



First cast and boom I was into a nice rainbow which broke me off thankfully keeping the bad luck of a first cast fish away. Then two casts later:







So they day got off to a good start and then I got a surprise when I switched to a streamer







Definitely hard to complain when you're 2/3rd of the way to a ga trout slam before 830.



The streamer continued to pay off











Then a switch to a mop fly really paid off





After a good fight the slam was complete





Then to end the morning I caught the fish I lost on the first cast





Definitely a good trip, now to try and get a redfish on the fly

Grandson and I have been fishing the Soque for several years. He always fishes with the guide and catches the big ones . Couple years ago he caught one that guide said would weigh ten pounds plus.Must have fought the fish 20 minutes or so.
I always fish a quiet pool as I’ve gotten too old to try to wade swift water.
I usually fish a little black stonefly or a black or brown wooly bugger. These in size 8 work for me.
Ms Abby and her help run a nice place up there. We going back in late October.

She does, that's the first place I've fished that I had pay and felt I got my money's worth. My only issue is it takes over 3.5 hours to get there for me and I can be on the coast in 3hrs or less so it's hard sell to get me to go north.

Sounds like a fun trip and your pix look good, kind of. But the files are so large, only half the image is displaying, at least for me. Would much rather see the whole shot than count the scales on the fish.

Are you using RAW or very high resolution for your uploads? If so, you might want to try web-friendly sizes like 400-500 KB per image. Just a suggestion.

They are direct from Dropbox and are full resolution, I posted it to gon and copied the links from it, for some reason gon resizes them but this forum doesn't. They show up fine on a desktop but not on a mobile browser I see now. I'll repost them tomorrow with the Facebook links instead.

And the last picture is the copperhead that greeted me after I got back home, just an FYI to everyone if you use a high brass steel shot duck shell you'll be picking up pieces of snake all over the place.

Here was my first trip to the north fork of the white river in Arkansas I recommend it over the white unless you are specifically after big brown trout

Trout fishing in Missouri at Montauk state park on the current river, no fish porn, couldn't keep them buttoned up on the roostertail. Had to drive through the dry riverbed to get to the park because I missed the ferry. It was cool to see the Montauk spring and the current river headwaters.
