Sat down and looked at the forecast Tuesday night and decided to take the weatherman's word for a change and try to go offshore Wednesday. The weather just hasn't been favorable enough here lately, but Wednesday looked like the only decent day for this week. I called up a buddy of mine who is yet to catch a grouper and told him to not make any plans for Wednesday except to go fishing. He consented, so off we went.

We got to the marina around 7:30 and was greeted by only one other person and virtually no wind.....not even a breeze :P . We headed out and was greeted by a very low tide.....lowest I've seen in a while.....lot's of fog too. I punched in a favorite number, and off we went. About 45 minutes later, we got anchored up. The bite was a little slow at first, but gradually picked up only producing one keeper gag and a few shorts with the ever faithful multitude of grunts. We fished for an hour and then decided to move to spot #2. We anchored up again, and this time the bite was on! We started catching red snapper one after another.....and tossing them back one after another  . Finally the grouper started to get in on the action. I boated a nice 25" red and a few keeper gags. My buddy, the grouper virgin, finally caught a short gag (19"). A few minutes later, he boated his first keeper.......a 26" gag! We stayed on this spot for about 3 hours catching fish the entire time.....getting broke off a few times too. We decided to start making our way back in a stopped off at one more spot to load up on the rock bass. Within 15 minutes, we had all we felt like cleaning, so we decided to call it a day.

The weather offshore was just short of heavenly......bright and sunny with 1-2 ft. seas. However, on the way back in, we were greeted with some of the thickest fog I have ever seen. We took it really slow back to the channel due to the extremely low tide and was back at the marina around 3:30. It was an excellent day on the water and and well worth taking the day off from work!

TOTAL FOR THE DAY: 4 GAGS (24"-30")
1 RED (25")
40 ROCK BASS

We caught most of the fish off LY's and squid, but I think live bait would have been the trick (all the fish caught had them in their stomachs). Water temperature averaged around 67 and we fished from 55'- 75'. Mike said that alot of grouper have been caught lately in the 35'-50' range.
