Mrs. Rascal is from the Riverport/Lunenburg, Nova Scotia area (moved to the states a coupla years ago). Her family, like many others, was raised in fishing communities. Boy oh boy, the stories they can tell. "The Perfect Storm" type stuff.
Anyhoo, Yarmouth is where we returned to the states from NS last year. We travelled on "The Cat" Ferry....
Never before has a ferry of this size and speed called the waters of the North Atlantic its home. This is the next generation of The CAT - the fastest car ferry in North America. The only ferry that can fly 900 passengers and 250 cars and 14 tour buses or motorhomes across the ocean at highway speeds. This, along with great comfort and passenger amenities.
Designed for ocean conditions, the 98-metre (320-foot) Cat glides smoothly over the Gulf of Maine, traveling at highway speeds up to 55 mph (90 km/h) and cuts a six-hour journey on a traditional car ferry down to two hours and 45 minutes. The Cat saves its passengers a full day's driving between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Bar Harbor, Maine or 630 miles (1,015 driving kilometers)
So innovative is this new ship that at every port of call the world over, the Cat has become a major attraction in itself.
Built for maximum speed and maximum passenger comfort, the ultra-sleek CAT is a breakthrough in marine technology. The CAT's revolutionary design funnels the power of four 9,500 horsepower marine diesel engines through four water jets. Designed to exceed the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's High-Speed Craft Code as well as the Det Norske Veritas High-Speed Light Craft Rules, The CAT is North America's fastest car ferry - and one of the most advanced vessels in the world. Other unique design features include revolutionary aluminum hull construction, and active trim tab and T-foil ride control systems that ensure a comfortable ride.
The INCAT 98 Wave-Piercing Catamaran is manufactured in Australia by INCAT. Incat pioneered the modern high-speed car ferry and now supplies over 40 percent of the world market. And a few more Cat facts - The CAT's four water jets could fill an Olympic swimming pool in 33 seconds. And the aluminum required to build The CAT could produce 32 million beverage cans!
The Cat. The fastest car ferry in North America. And one of the safest.
