Choppy Seas - Technical Question

As I sit scratching the night away :roll: , this popped in my mind :o

What is the technical definition of choppy seas...

Would you say Average Period (APD) <= to Wave Height (WVHT) would be good starting definition for choppy seas?

APD 8 Secs with a 8' WVHT....What do you think? :smt102

too deep for me but 8/8 wouldn't be choppy to me if I understand the eq.

I was thinking more like 1-2/2 would be chop (not under way but just sitting there)
use your opportunities ...

Rodbow- according to that formula, you are correct. An 8/8 would be the equivalent of rather large swells. Those would make for a fun ride in any boat....especially a jet skii :-D

It was more of an analytical question, not a practical one, I gave the specifications of 8 for graphical representation. 8x8 being square, but I omitted the current/speed and 8x8 would not necessarily be square, unless you added current and wind speed.....But my point was the time the wave becomes rectangular (APD<WVHT) in relation to wave height would equal choppy......I’m going to get some coffee now….

If ya have ta slow down to see the depth finder or GPS cause yur eyes are bounc'n ..... it's choppy! :roll:
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

Did a quick look for some definitions, relating to seas forcasting, and found the following:
http://www.geology.wmich.edu/Kominz/windwater.html -- nice with pictures of related seas.
http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/pages/marinedef.php -- see seas, combined seas.

'Couldn't find any thing for chop, lt chop, choppy, rough, but I didn't spend much time with the search..
