LANARK VILLAGE 1-17-05

Post by dolphinatic »

I had a few friends with the day off and they have been begging me to take them fishing for grouper. I wasn't doing much, so consented to take them out despite the cooler weather and recent front that just passed through. We got to Lanark about 8:00 and it was COLD.....when I saw no other boats there, I started 2nd guessing on what to expect. We decided to give it a try and figured we could always go home.....but can't always go fish  . We got around the east end of Dog Island and were greeted with 15-20's and 3-5's :o . I wasn't gonna fool with that so we headed down to the west end of the Island where the wind was hardly blowing and the water was smooth. We anchored down near the shrimp boat and decided to wait and see what the weather was gonna do. We marked fish all over the bottom, but only managed a few rock bass. We decided to pull up and see if it was gonna be worth trying to hit any holes or just call it a day. We got back around the Island and the seas had come down some along with the wind.....it was still COLD and I was thinking about how dumb I was to be out there and if I would even post this trip at all out of embarassment  We eventually made it to hole #1 and started catching nice rock bass right away. One of the guys even managed to find a nice red grouper.......the first one he had ever been able to keep! We had some nice bited, but no other grouper. As we were getting everything together to head back in, my buddy that caught the grouper said he had a nice fish on....I thought he was screwing with us, but sure enough he had something on. After 5 minutes or so, he got the fish to the top and it swam right at the boat......a 38" redfish! We got it in the boat and admired it for a minute before releasing it back to fight again another day. We started back in and was back at the ramp at 5:00.......cold, wet and ready to go home. Not the best day to be on the water, but we caught some nice fish and it still beat being at work....even in the heat!

TOTAL FOR THE DAY:

65 ROCK BASS (10-16")
1 RED GROUPER (24")
1 NICE BULL RED (38")
8 SHRIVLED? TESTES

THE ROCK BASS HIT EVERYTHING FROM WHOLE LY'S TO SQUID TO THE SINKERS ON THE RIGS. THE GROUPER AND REDFISH HIT WHOLE LY'S. WE FISHED IN 45 FT. AND THE WATER TEMP WAS 63. SURFACE TEMP WAS COLD COLD COLD.......WE MARKED ALOT OF NICE FISH ON THE BOTTOM STACKED ALL OVER EACH OTHER, BUT JUST COULDN'T GET THEM TO BITE.....I THINK LIVE BAIT WOULD HAVE HELPED.

Thanks for the report and I congratulate you and your party on some hardy "sticktoitiveness" Sounds like the rockies are tear'n it up. I have as well, had one come all the way into the boat hold'n on to the sinker like you spoke of. :D
