Carrabelle 25 Jan, No Pictures Please

Post by qoutrage »

Okay SR, the official report- Fcst called for sunny and 62 with average conditions on the water. Put in/out,. as the case may be, to fairly low water, but a rising tide at about 11AM. All of this on a full moon.
The ride out was nice on maybe a foot or little better and light wind. Anchored down about 6 miles off DI in 45 ft of water.
LY's and squid were on the menu- Either, they weren't hungry or dining someplace else. The Hummingbird indicated the former, unless there is such a thing as sonar ap.
Moved out to 11 off Dog and 60 ft, as the wind picked up to about 8-10 kts. Anchor would not hold (bent from the last trip and would not set- I will have a 2nd one ob next trip).
Drift of any consequence didn't work. Got soime good bumps, as we passed over structure, but only lasted a couple of minutes before over sandy bottom again. 'Tried a jig a while on the drifts with no luck.
'Thought about trolling, but decided, to hell with it and made our way back in about 3:30.
'Bucked 2-3 or better all the way back to the river, including the bay.
The day wasn't a total lose, though. 'Was able to see how the boat handled in fairly rough conditions.
'Learned a little about motor trim on less than smooth water and to check that the anchor is good shape before leaving the ramp.
A couple of fish in the boat would have made it better.
'Wat'ser Name' complained of a headache last night, I don't know why..Maybe, the near whiplash she got from the ride in.

At least you was out there :-D Next time, try trolling back in when the ride is a tad rough, it's easier on the body and you will almost always catch something

Thanks for the report qoutrage  (I was out of bed this time  )

Sounds like the fish may have been holding tight to their spots....
Got soime good bumps, as we passed over structure, but only lasted a couple of minutes before over sandy bottom again.
Even with a crippled anchor, I think I'd have to have thrown a bouy and tried to anchor up on one of those spots or at least thrown out the anchor and let it drag to slow me down over those spots. Hope you marked em

Yeah SR, we did drift with the anchor draggin. With the wind and and fairly strong current, it didn't slow us down much. In 10-15 mins we would be .25 off the number.
'Bout wore out Freddy, the anchor man. I bet he slept good last nite.
And, good idea Wevans with the trollin in. 'Might have prevented the hard looks, I was gettin', from 'Wat'ser Name',too.

Glad someone is going out. You might try the "sea claw" style anchor they sell in Medart - it can be rigged "breakaway", but will hold in sand and rock.

Luck,
