I was in a bait shop in the Big Bend area this weekend and saw an aquarium full of big goldfish. There was a sign on the tank to remind everyone that "using goldfish for bait is illegal".

The sign on the building did not say "Bait Shop and Goldfish pond supplier", so the golsdfish are obviously for bait.

My question is: If it were not illegal to use goldfish as bait,

what type fish would goldfish be used for?

I Found it!! Not naming any names......but here is the article.

Whew! The caffeine overdose has me spewing rhetoric and feeling up my words again. Four young boys from Ala-dam-bama came to town last Friday just itchinâ€™ to fight big groupers. They brought their own live baits, a first for me. A 150 quart Igloo cooler was loaded with a dozen, dozen live goldfish. I know, freshwater goldfish canâ€™t live in saltwater. Well, guess what, all they need to do is live long enough to make it into Bubba Grouperâ€™s living room. They used a high volume 12 volt pump to keep them alive from LA (lower Alabama) to Apalach. We could be onto something here. Captain Goldfish! Every time these boys dropped a goldfish down, it got hammered. My 40 gallon live bait well was full of nice, dock trapped pinfish and five to seven inch finger mullet. By 10am we had to go to fish box #2, as the lid on the big 150 quart box would not close. The fishing was awesome. All of the recent storms, strong currents, fluctuating barometric pressure etc. has the grouper turned on big time.

Bet they go into shock just like blueback herring when you drop them in fresh water. The herring go into spasms when they get fresh water in their gills. The stripers and hybirds can't resist them, they appear as an injured fish fighting for it's life.

I bet the bait shop was in Perry. I've asked them why they sale them there and the response I got was great. "They are for feeding aquarium fish."
They do make great Bass bait. I've used them in Mississippi in the ponds where the Bass have seen every lure in the world thrown at them. I've watched bass in gin clear water storm a goldfish as soon as it hit the water.
