Venice 3/20-21
Trailered two boats over to Venice La. Saturday for some redfishing. Weather looked marginal but, it was the only chance to go for the next several weeks. Got in late Saturday to Cypress Cove Lodge just in time to hit the resturant for some fresh tuna steaks. Little did I know this would be the high point of the next 24 hrs. Sunday morning dawned overcast and misting rain. By the time we got the boats launched the rain was really coming down with heavy lighting and thunder. We sat in the trucks for an hour waiting for the lighting to pass and finally headed for the wagon wheel around 9:00. Water was low, muddy, and only 56 degrees. Couldn't get back into some of the ponds we wanted to fish so we fished the main channels with little success. By 11:00 the sun poped out and the wind kicked up to around 20 knts. Classic post frontal conditions. Beat the water to a froth for the remainder of the day without the first taker. Headed in around 5:00 got cleaned up and went to Port Sulfur for some mudbugs. Found a place that had 5 lb of steamed crayfish, potatoes, sausage and corn for $10. Ate way too much. Monday morning looked more promising with light winds and plenty of sun. Got back up in the ponds and around 10:00 the water warmed up enough for the fish to bite. First red of the day, 22", hit a Bayou Buck spinner. Different flavors of this lure proved to be the bait of choice for the rest of the day. Ended the day with ten keepers from 17" to 31". The 31", your allowed one over the 27" max, hit the same spinner and I missed him the first strike. Threw right back in to the same spot and the fight was on. Had him to the boat four different times before my son could get the net under him. All and all from a numbers standpoint this was the slowest trip we have ever had over there but, we still caught some nice reds in very tough conditions. Planing another trip in October.
