Thrust washer stuck

Pulled my prop to do some routine maintenance and found that the thrust washer is stuck. Its a 96 Johnson 112 and the thrust washer is the large metal washer behind the prop. Tried some corrosion x and a rubber malet to no avail. Any suggestions?

Might could try a gear puller, heat could damage the seals, so it's out....

Thanks for the suggestion Chalk. Went and got a gear puller, longest I could find. To short and even if it was long enough the ends that would go around the thrust washer would not have fit between the lower unit housing and the washer

Try to find a different one tomorrow.

They make one that will work, just a matter of finding one to borrow....I have used them to pull 1/4" bearing off long skinny shafts when I worked on periscopes....There is always the dremel way....You could always trade the boat for a new one

The is a new boat to me, just trying to get everything into shape and make sure its all good. First issue so far, knock on wood.

You could try getting a huge pair of vice grips and clamping them around the washer. Tap on the vice grips and that might loosen it up. A gear puller would be the best idea if you can find one.

Good morning finniefish and welcome to the forum

I don't know how long you've been working on this but a couple of things I could suggest would be to at least daily, apply some more penetrating solution of some sort to the area. Take a 1/4 or 5/16 etc punch and tap lightly all around the washer to set up some vibration. You could also try putting the prop nut back onto the shaft just far enough to where there are no threads beyond the face of the nut. Then take a very thin blade screw driver or similar tool and see if you can just catch the edge of the washer and apply light pressure outward. While doing that take a hammer and tap on the face of the nut on the shaft. This should again set up some vibration and hopefully loosen the washer. Good luck and let us know how things work out.

Now that you mention it CB, we have done something similar before

A pair of needle nose vice grips on the washer and a regular pair clamped on the needle nose, a small piece of wood under the edge of the regular ones to pry down on and a small tap with a hammer on the regular pair to force the needle nose "and washer" up and out

Went to bellflower to get spline washers and asked them what they would do. He said put 2 screwdrivers behind the thrust washer and a rag on the housing and just pry on it, it ill pop. Worked perfect, couple prys and it popped right into my chest. I like the guys at Bellflower now that they have new ownership very helpful and lots of good advice.
