St Marks 4-25,26

My Pastor and I were heading out the St. Marks River Monday at about 6:45 and decided to see if those stories about big trout near oyster bars were true. We pulled into the mouth of the East River and started throwing Top Dogs below a bar with a fast ebbing tide on smooth water. I had about decided that all of those stories were mear fish tales when a 20 incher politely slurpped up my pastor's lure. A few minutes later he had another keeper inhale a jig. I couold do nothing for a while but try to keep his end of the boat away from the fish. Finally a flash at my Dog that ended in a small thermonuclear detonation. Even though the now 15 lb. trout got away I am hooked on top water trout. I got a keeper in the boat a few minutes later after a few missed strikes. We moved out to the west and had a total of 5 keeper trout befor the first throwback. The bite slowed and we trolled down to the East catching 5 nice Spanish on the way. Around 1:30 things picked up again. My pastor refused to turn the other cheek and wore me out. We ended up with 10 keeper trout after releasing several 15s. The Rev tried to find something they would not bite but failed. Together we probably released 60-80 or more. I had to keep my fish in the release well for my pastor to cull against.

Tuesday we were the only fools out there and it was pretty rough. We caught 4 keepers and a few shorts by 10:45 and quit when the rain looked near. The trout Tuesday small and large hit with a vengence. There just weren't great in number.

All in all was a great time. I just wish my Pastor had better connections and could have calmed the storm Tuesday. I know he could have walked on water Monday by the way he caught fish.

I too have lost many of those 15lb trout and several 50lb redfish. In fact, I never managed to land a single one. Just don't understand it. :-D :-D Still sounded like a pretty good day.

Come on Wevans. Great trip Dognuts. Nothing better than topwater trout and good companionship to share it.

Alright fellas, let me brag alittle. Sunday afternoon I took a good friend of mine, & his 16 yr old son out (first time on salt water) We put in at the light house, then after a couple of hrs of hop-in around, we hit a Honey-Spot !! dropped anchor.... Had a great time :-D We had our share of throw-backs, but we kep't 7 trout (three-of were over 30" each) an 1 spanish mackerial ???? however you spell-it, it was small, but 15" works for me.

Water temp. was 68, choppie, & it was'nt that crowded either :thumbup:

HEY MAKO, AINT SUPPOSE TO BE ANY 30" TROUT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR KEPT IN THE BOX. THOSE MUST HAVE BEEN SOME PRETTY FISH, BET THEY WERE FULL OF ROE, GLAD YA WERE ABLE TO GET INTO THE FISH.

Yea, they had full belly's... they were :thumbup: :thumbup: We caught them with live shrimp, in 5-6'

....an I'm sorry I can't show ya some pictures, but that my story, & I'm stickin' to it 8) . Also, just thought I'd throw in a plug for "Jerry's Bait & Tackle" cause thats where our shrimp's came from :thumbup:

Mako, Do you mean 20"????? If it was 3 over 30" that is awesome. (and very rare)
