Trout Parasite Questions: anyone know the answer?

Post by Marv922 »

Having been fortunate enough to boat a few trout the last couple of weeks, I have noticed when cleaning them that a small percentage appear to have small white worms or some kind of parasite in the flesh. What is this and is it harmful to the meat?

It has been several years since I fished for specs on a regular basis and that was in Louisiana and Mississippi. I do not recall any such parasite in the fish back then in those areas. Any info appreciated.
Best of luck to all!!!

They are worms. You'll find them in most all trout you catch in this area. If they would hurt you, most of us on this forum would be dead.
What was I supposed to do today?

seriously... Some trout caught may have worms embedded in the flesh along the backbone. These "spaghetti" worms are larval stages of a tapeworm that can only reach maturity in sharks. It cannot survive in man even if it is eaten raw. The worms can easily be removed during filleting to make the meat more appealing, however, they constitute a richer protein than the fish themselves. :o

I have heard that REAL MEN, eat the worms and throw the fish away.

If somebody at your table is squeamish and you need to camouflage the worms just deep fry the fish. If they ask, tell'em it's just a vein.
