SGI State Park Ramp- ?

Post by mjsigns »

This weekend I am planning on putting my 17' Key West in at the ramp on St. George Island down in the state park. Since I've never put the boat in there, does anyone have any experience they can share about the ramp, or the navigation of the area, or any other helpful information?

Thanks in advance - :smt006

Thanks Captain Ron-

I am taking a bunch of Cub Scouts to the Youth Camp Friday - Sunday and will take small groups fishing fishing within sight of the camping area, and don't want to have any "surprises". It will be one of those "fun" trips.

MJ, your boat has been launched from the state park before. As Capt. Ron suggested, take a look on a low tide before you launch.

Put these points in your GPS. They'll get you out and back in.

LOW tides

Post by Pirate »

I've put in there many times over the years in several different boats and if those GPS #'s will guide you thru you'll be fine. The one problem you better be aware of is the LOW tide. More than once I've made it to the ramp only to have such low water that I couldn't get the boat on the trailer and had to anchor and just come back at high tide. Also the no see'uns seem to be hungry around there. Good luck!

I appreciate the advice and the numbers... Found out yesterday that the SGI state park staff made a mistake with our "mothers day weekend" camping reservations.... They booked the site for some 4-H club group. They admitted an error had occurred and offered the primitive camping area to us, instead of the youth camp. :smt011 Told them the primitive camp is more than our Cub scouts are ready for and the SGI park officials just offered their apologies.... :smt009 We quickly made reservations at "three rivers state park" so we are still going camping this weekend. If I worked for the park service, I'd just be pure embarrassed.

I'll be taking the boat to the lake for the weekend... How is boating on that lake? Any real hazards? Stumps? submerged snags? :o We are going to have fun anyway. :D
