Lanark Report 5-29

Post by EddieJoe »

I had decided to drive all the way to Apalachicola to avoid the WTB crowds, but when I went by Lanark at 6:15 there were only a few boats going in, so I stopped there.

Conditions were beautiful, with a SW wind at 5-10k, seas 1-2 foot. I stopped at Dog Island Reef and caught a bunch of bait, pins, thread herring, and hardtails. Decided to zip on out to K-tower for an AJ, and the trip was pretty quick, not too rough. Tied up to the tower (I was the second boat there) and boated an AJ after a couple of cut offs. Went to my first grouper spot, and after many, many shorts boated one nice gag. I headed to another hole, and spotted a bunch of little tunny jumping on the surface, so decided to see if I could get one to take a nylure on my 10lb spinning outfit. Made a couple of casts with no results, and was pulling the nylure to the boat when a big ole jack crevalle came up and whammed the nylure. I tried to get it away from him but the tug of war was on. I enjoyed the fight, but after a while I began to palm the reel because 15 minutes of hard fighting was getting my arms tired. Got him to the boat, and I estimated the weight to be about 25 lbs. Released him nicely and went on. (note- many dolphins crashing around my anchored boat, I swear one took my live thread herring off of the hook- they have really been common the last couple of trips)

Next hole nothing but sharks and many shorts, and by now it was after 12. I had made a pact with myself to come in early and beat the big boat rush. So headed in, and got a look at the tent city on the east end of Dog Island. Actually, things looked pretty nice and not too crazy. There were the usual jet skiis and bayliners but not bad at all. Made it in at the ramp right away.

Nice day.

Luck,

EJ
