Aucill River 5/29 Artificials Rule!

Post by Aucilla »

With My Sweet Susan aboard the 13'er, we fished out of the Aucilla River yesterday. We left Williams Landing about 1:30, at low tide, intending to fish the rising tide 'til dark. Maybe 15 or so trailers were there.

Headed towards Cobb Rock and then drifted toward shore. The water was murky, couldn't see bottom, or the rocks, in 18 inches of water.

Susan had the first hook up of the day, a fun, big sailcat on cut bail:

Luckily, JR didn't have any shrimp, and I couldn't get any pinfish with the sabiki, so I focused entirely on your good advice, and was experimenting. Result?

This would be my first keeper red on an artificial! Here's what worked for me, tipped with a bit of frozen shrimp:

We fished around Big Redfish Point, but no action as the high tide settled in to slack. Then we headed in and fished the sunset in the shelter of the river mouth, which please Sweet Susan as it was pretty windy and choppy outside. That hat of hers looked good, but didn't cut it! I got a strike and saw 4 or 5 slashing swishes but no takers there. Tried light and dark colors.

We were the last one's out, and then we headed to Posey's for a few   dances, and that place was packed!

Good job Aucilla, you've got the hang of it now! Them reds have been bashing that spinner bait pretty good this year.
My partner went to the same area yeaterday, and said it was ROUGH! He also had to tip his artificals with shrimp.

Great Report Bill -

Great pics and what a nice looking red! Good to see you and the Mrs's fishing together. That makes all the difference :-D

I am still a bit scared to launch at the Aucilla for all the rocks. TC says my boat has been in and out of there several times. I'm just not ready to try... :o

PA: You are the Master! I know you could sure teach me some things I'd love to know, and you already have a taught us a lot about the important things in life, like stayin' right with it!

That spinner is a ZZ Spot R-Bend Jr. from Bayou Bucks and the tail [or chub] is purple/chartruese. If you are going to make your own, I will tell you that the purple had some blue sparkles in it.

Here is the website for the maker, and you'll see they have a lot of cool things: http://bayoubucklures.com/speckled-trou ... ures-3.htm

I musta gotten mine by buying it online, or maybe I won it some where. Here is a list of Florida tackle shops that are supposed to be selling them: http://bayoubucklures.com/saltwater-fis ... tm#florida
They don't list anybody in Tall'ee, but do list C-Quarters in Carebelle and a couple places in Apalach.

Great seein' ya on here Pa.
