Welcome bonemaster, when fly fishing, I use as long a leader as conditions permit, but never less than 8ft.

Good fly patterns for sea trout are, Clouser Minnows ( especially chatreuse and white ), any Shrimp patterns, white Wooly Buggers and try the 3" DOA Nightglow shrimp.

There are a few fly fishermen on here, so hopefully, you will get some more information.

Cran's response is spot on. Clousers (chartreuse over white; orange over white; red over orange) are staples. I fish a clear monocore intermediate line with a ten foot/12 pound leader and a 20 pound fluoro shock. This set up is great for fishing trout in the surf or deep flats (greater than four feet). I run into lots of big trout while sight fishing for reds and they are receptive to Mangrove Critters, Seaducers and Kwans. If you are going to be looking for them in the skinny water I'd recommend a floating line with a 12 foot/12 pound leader and a 20 pound fluoro shock. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
