Aucilly 6/16: functionally skunked

Post by Aucilla »

Left "Williams Landing" on the Aucilla at 3:30 PM yesteday. One other trailer there. Stopped at a creek mouth south of the island and tried spoons and spinners, then headed out the river. It was windy and choppy. For the first time I went straight south out of the mouth: big mistake, but my aluminum prop lost little more than paint. So now I guess that the forces that favor oyster bars at river mouths mean there are more of them straight out the river, so next time I will turn east or west a lot sooner.

Headed east into the wind and chop to area that was fruitul a couple of weeks ago. Fished in 4 feet to 18 inches of water. The water was as stained as I have ever seen it. In the bright light of day, I could seen only an inch or two below the surface. I think I may avoid approaching Big Redfish Point again in water like thatl

All we got was a short trout and my buddy got a catfish, both on shrimp under a CT.

The ride back into the river was beautiful, with an isolated rainstorm and rainbow on one side, and a sunset on the other side coloring the smooth river surface and streaking light to the trees. A large osprey nest, complete with large hatchlings protruding over the top, was cool.

My Chines buddy was a hoot! He was so appreciative! He brought his camera and immediately began taking pictures: the best documented boat launch in a long time. The funniest part was when I thought I was clear of the oyster bars and got the boat up on a plane. As I said, it was choppy, so we were getting sprayed some. He took his little digital still camera and started it on video, waving it around to film me gripping the wheel and leaning into the wind and then turned it on himself to yell "yahoo!" on "film." He was telling me that his Taiwan friend did not believe he was going fishing in a boat. On the way back to town, I got a glimpse of his film and it was rediculously bouncy and noisey. I have a feeling it will be showing in China.

But, no, we didn't have any heads. I decided not to talk to him about that. I had a hard enough time trying to get him to understand what we mean by any joke, as in "That's why we call it 'fishing' and not 'catching.'" He got it only when I gave him the statistical odds of catching a "good" fish when you are guided by this here newbie. And, no, I am not giving those odds in any other context!

Ok Bill -
Lemme get this straight-
You broke a blade off your prop?
Sorry to hear about it. Was it
better than a day in the office?
Time is the most precious commodity we have in life, stay focused.

Mr. Mike,
Well..... I did lose a little aluminum with the paint, but at least there was no pollution warning like on the lead stuff we use [some of my lures say they would make a Californian sick if [s]he ate it]. But nevertheless, it was a great half-day out of the office and woulda been better if it had been a full one! But it was good to break the ice again on the hookey playin'! If only I had been able to sneek out in March and April and May..... Yeah , that's the tickee, er,,,, Ticket. Wrong month.
