CROOKED ISLAND SOUND/EAST BAY PC

Post by Old Dog »

It had been early spring since I had tried Crooked Island Sound for trout and since the grass had not grown back out from the winter die-back (in areas I like to fish), and not much was happening. I went again yesterday and found excellent conditions in the three places I fished. John McMillan and I fished for a little over three hours and found nine trout, and three were nice size keepers in the 18-20 inch range. The water was beautiful and we found plenty of healthy grass. I also saw some sea turtles, and two massive sharks in shallow water. One followed one of my Norton Bull Minnow lures right to the side of the boat, reminding me again why I don't like to wade-fish.:o

When the tide went slack and the action slowed, we pulled out and headed over to East Bay. We caught 88 trout, but only 5 more keepers. All the trout were caught in or near grass patches in 4 foot or less. We used mostly DOA 1/4 oz shrimp, free lined and under Cajun Thunders. And the Norton Bull Minnow lures of course, in glo and rootbear flake patterns.

The water in East Bay was dark with tannin and I suppose that was the result of recent heavy rains. The glo baits seemed to work best in the darker water.

Nice report OD. I've always wanted to drag my boat over that way and explore the bay.

Noleflyfisher, that is a great place to fly fish. Good grass in certain parts of the bay and quick access to the pass to the Gulf for reds etc.

Bogey, I use the landing on Research Road. Is that the Davis landing? I got my 20 footer in there but I had to back waaaay back to float it off the trailer. On a high tide (water comes into the shallows) it gets harder to launch.
