Reefs and wrecks

Post by KarstRanger »

Is there anything available on the internet that tells you where reefs and wrecks are in the Big Bend area?

Yes. This site. Go to, on the home page, "Area Charts". Check out "GPS Coordinates". Artificial reefs, wrecks, buoys, and some natural bottom noted. A good source.

GPS for Rock Garden

Post by Fighting Conch »

Does anyone have GPS numbers for the rocks in the Rock Garden? The major ones I have from this and the OAR site and from riding around but its the smaller subsurface ones that worry me. Like the one that wreaked lower unit a few years back.

The smaller you refer to I doubt seriously are recorded anywhwere, there are way too many, plus they move ;-) . Just know that anywhere in the Apalachee Bay when you get near shore, you should be off plane and idling...and watching.

I know the feeling.... I'd like to help you out but my Garmin 152 will only hold 500 waypoints and I figured there was no way I could identify all of them :o :smt005
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

Thanks EddieJoe, the GPS coord's list on this site is most cool.

I also would like to know if some of the waypoints are showing shallow natural bottom (unless you guys are pulling my leg --again :-D )

I've marked a couple of rocks.
1. N30 04.321 W84 07.732 (There is a white pole sticking up from this rock.)

2. N30 04.416 W84 07.415

3. N30 04.684 W84 07.481

All three are definitely not ones you want to encounter at high speed. Saw a school of reds at the 1st marker a few weeks back but has not been there since.
Hope this helps.

The ones on the list that say "rock" in the description are natural hard bottom. Often, there is also natural hard bottom in the vicinity of the numerous artificial reefs on the list. Ya gotta look when you are out there.
