St. Joe Bay 7/3-7/8/05, Crooked Island 7/4/05

Redfish headlined all week on the bay. We lost count of the number of reds we caught from the city ramp all the way around the lower end of the bay to just south of Eagle Harbor. All the reds were caught in less than 2' of water on Capt. Mikes gold spoons.

Trout were all together different. Caught a lot of shorts, but didn't bring home more than 4 on any given day. Most of the keeper trout were 18"-21" . The trout seemed to be better along the west side of the Bay and the few keepers we caught were on topwater or grubs fished on the bottom in 4'-6' of water.

Scallopers were there in full force but didn't seem to hinder the fishing much. Eckley at Presnells said it was an average year for scalllops and they were still rather small. I've never seen so many people work so hard for so little to eat.

On the 4th decided to try behind Crooked Island. Very fishey looking small bay just west of Mexico Beach. Enjoyed fishing there , but did not like having to put the truck in the saltwater when using the shallow dirt ramp. Ended up with 2 reds and 4 trout all on topwater.

Great week in the PSJ, Mexico Beach area. Can't wait until next time.

Just to narrow it down, you can catch reds from the "stump hole" clear around to the sea wall at PSJ.

I like the Capt Mike spoon. I've caught some nice reds on them from our area all the way over to Port Sulphur, LA.

I was in Crooked Island Sound the 5th. Caught no reds but did a few trout. Did better in the afternoon over on East Bay at Calloway.
