1st Timer w/ Questions

Post by Wes Syder »

Hi There

I’m going to be fishing off the surf in Alligator & Ball Point areas of the Big Bend. I would like to find out your opinions, when fishing for Spotted Trout, Black Drum, Red Fish, and Spanish mackerel.

1. Which is best LIVE bait or LURES?
2. What is the best way to rig my bait?
3. What’s the best time of day?

What other species of fish are abundant in that area that can be caught while surf fishing?

Hi Wes,
I would suggest you look at the subforum on here called "Inshore Fishing" and read the reports. They will teach you a lot. Also, sometimes there is something on-point in the general "fishing" sub-forum or the "tips" one.
I bet you will find a wealth of information far faster than anyone can answer all your questions. There are some very experienced folks on here who have shared alot on the many questions you must have.
There is a difference of opinion on live bait versus artificials. Live bait is usually shriimp or pinfish, but sand fleas [a crab-like thing] and even small crabs are good for some things. Rigging is easily found on the web. But there is a recent thread on here regarding "leader length" on a "CT." Look at that.
Time of day will be determined by the tides. Slack tide is the least likely time to catch.
My solution is to fish hard all day. But I am an amateur.

Good luck.

PS: Look> These are just two of the recent teaching posts:

The latter is perhaps a "print and save" item.
