Grouper Fishing Question
Is drifting a bottom rig about 1.5 feet off the bottom with live bait an effective way to locate grouper on large rock reefs. Then once you catch a fish mark the location and anchor ?
I can drift and bottom fish. I use circle hooks and keep contact with the bottom but keep it up. I still hang up sometimes. Rod holders work well with circle hooks. Shorter leaders (3') also help.
Don't drift with rookies. When I take rookies with j hooks you can't rerig fast enough. They will stay hung up. No sense giving them a circle hook. They have watched too many bass fishing shows on tv. They are going to set that hook like Roland Martin. Best to use the bottom machine and mark the spot with a bouy and anchor up.
In deeper water I sometimes mark a spot on the GPS and hold position with the engine especially if I just want to make a drop and check it out.
All depends on sea conditions and what the bottom is like.
