Post by Jumptrout51 »

Anyone have any details on a boat crash at the Econfina ditch yesterday?

There's been a couple of additional bits of info on the FS forum posted by the indivudual who towed the one boat in. Haven't heard anything about the nature of the injuries

I read it was around the island and no wake zone, sounded like someone was taking the shortcut coming in and someone was taking it going out...It's too tight for that

unless 2 canoes are zipping through there, 2 average boats and good chance you'll hit something. If thats right i'd expect a idle speed sign there soon. Coming in and outta Econfina in our boat gets some looks anyway. Everyone is always amazed we run it. With all the newbies out this weekend and the low water they were sitting by the tripod on idle and we zipped by and thats all they needed to follow, show me the way, i believe they would have followed us up one of the feeder creeks.

Just got off the phone with FWC Officer in Perry. He confirmed that there was indeed a head on collision between two craft. There were confirmed injuries to 3 with a broken ankle (in two places) being the worst known injury. The injured parties were taken to the Hospital in Perry. The accident is under criminal investigation and no other information is available to the public at this time.

I am always surprised at the way folks run the river, especially in the no wake zones. Incidentally, some of those folks that got blasted by at the mouth close enough to cast to were fishing the bars.

Not a smart place to fish on a holiday weekend.
If you don't blast out of there you do like the rest of them. Sit and wish.

Man I just got back from vacation at P.C. Took my boat and went out a couple of times around the St. Park and Shell Island. Its amazing at the people on the water with no knowledge (or either don't care) of how to operate a boat safely. they don't keep to the right, they run the markers in the channel any kind of way, so you have to try to geuss what an oncoming boats gonna do. Also the don't mind running right beside ya when your fishing or anchored up at the beach. :smt011Pretty water but what a bunch of idiots! Our Appalchee Bay is a much more safer feeling place when it comes to boat traffic, for now.
Hate to hear about the stupidity at Econfina, thats just gonna bring "The Man" down on us more :x .
oh yeah 1 more rant, was sitting on the jetties Tuesday evening watching the boats navigate the pass, it was rough, and the Parasail Boats we're playing around running back and forth across the pass, I geuss playing on the huge waves. Saw them more than once cut in front of boats that were trying to carefully make it back in thru the rough pass :smt013 made me mad just watching! But what gets me more than that was where were all the marine patrol I had seen earlier in the day that were all over the place stopping people? Geuss they work banker's hours. :smt005

I've never taken the short cut for that very reason. Some jackass that wants to beat the boats in the no wake zone back to the ramp is the perfect recepie for a collision.
Sorry it happened, but it was only a matter of time.
