St Marks River 7/17

Post by dave7 »

Didn't really fish this afternoon. Put a new prop on the Johnson and just cruised around checking things out and getting a feel for how the prop ran. Put in at New Port after hearing about questionable conditions at the Fort. Ran up the St. Marks a couple miles against a pretty strong current with lots of floating debris.

Turned around and went on down to the Fort. I was surprised to see the Riverside Cafe was open and full of folks, Poseys still looked closed though. Realistically, at least from the water, the damage down there wasn't nearly what I expected to see. Seems as though the water simply 'rose up' as opposed to washing through.

Plenty of folks were figuring out the ramp at the Fort and the parkinglot had lots of trucks in it.

Headed on out towards the SMR Entrance. Pretty windy on the way out - with a solid chop made for a pretty rough ride. Got out to the entrance to the LH boat ramp and turned around. Waves out there were kinda nasty for the Hopper. A storm came up and seemed to be sitting over the St Marks and New Port area - complete with a very healthy dose of lightning. .. :o Ended up hugging close to shore near the LH and anchoring to wait about a hour before running back up river to New Port.

Water at the LH was DARK and very silty. Cast a few times with only one strike. Lots of stuff still in the water - picked up about a 2 foot long section of wood fence post that was floating.

The new prop has smoothed out some of the boat's old shakes and increased the top speed a little bit.

Dave, you don't have to go very far above Newport to get into rock country. The river gets real shallow, with almost solid rock bottom.
What was I supposed to do today?

Dave, you ought to ck. it out though. Water is crystal clear, and it's really neat to see.
