Answered Prayers

Post by finniefish »

First and foremost thanks to Steve and Answered Prayers for going above and beyond, if you ever need anything just let me know. And sorry to Steve and the rest of the guys in the tourny for not checking in and letting ya'll know we were OK. The day started off rough, left Jerry’s at 6:00 after signing up for the NFGFC tournament and realized we forgot the ice, had to have it since we were going to be weighing some fish later. Late start at the LH but we were fishing by 7:00. Headed to west flats between LH and Patty’s Island, caught some short trout, one keeper and a bunch of small sharks on shrimp under CT and glow jigs fishing was slow but than IT hit. Woodburn was working a shrimp under a CT and thought another Pin was hitting than his reel starting singing, something big was on. I said shark but we just did not know until I saw the tail. After about a 15 minute fight we netted, barely netted, a 32’ red. It hit while drifting over one of the deeper channels in front of Patty’s. No camera but we had eye witnesses, another boat came over after cause he had to know what it was. Fish of a life time on the flats.

The nasty black clouds started getting closer so we decided to head up the river to a friend’s house boat and wait it out instead of sitting in the truck at the LH. After some rain we started to head back out and the lighting started flashing, so instead went to Riverside for lunch. Watching the radar we decided it was time to head back to the LT and load up since another band was coming. NOT, got in the boat and it would not crank. Thought it was battery so I carried it done to shields but the battery was good, back to riverside fiddled some more, nothing. Walked back to Shields to find someone to tow me from Riverside to a ramp then have my sister come down and take me over to get my truck. That’s when I ran into Steve and Answered Prayers. He told me not to bother my sister that he would tow me to the fort and give me a ride in his boat around to the LT to get my truck. Thanks again Steve.

But wait it don’t end there. I get back to the fort with the truck to find my partner with a lure stuck in his arm. He had to cut the treble since the barb was in deep; he pushed it through enough and told me to grab it with pliers. Oops, pulling wrong side, we finally got it out, boat loaded and got home.

My first fishing tournament and of course I catch something "over" the limit. I still cant believe we didnt have a camera since one of us usually brings one. The fight was incredible and the fish was a beautiful copper color. The fish was so fat too... you had to put your entire hand under the gills to lift him. I dont see us ever forgetting a camera again.

And the dang lure... I saw Finnie driving up so I quickly reeled in and while rushing to put the pole in the other holder, the back of my forearm was snagged by the chugbug rigged on the other pole. Prolly need to get a tetanus shot tomorrow since the hook was alittle rusted.

Of course, the boat not starting wasnt fun. At least we werent stuck out on the flats in the storm. The clouds were evil looking and also camera worthy.

Thanks again Steve for helping us out.

Wow, sounds like you guys had a ton of trouble. Glad everything worked out ok. Hope you get that boat up and runnin'. Check you contacts for corrosion...not that I would have an experience with that :-? :-? . Glad you guys at least got a nice fish to offset the problems some.

We saw you guys getting "dropped off" at the fort. Didn't know you were in the tourny. Tuff luck
