Econfina 8/13

Post by pops »

Got to the ramp at about 8 am ran straight pass the tripod about 2 miles and started a first drift. Caught a couple of short trout, then caught a 4 foot gar, several large sail cats, my wife caught a 19" trout, a 16" trout and I landed a 21".
I was fishing with a 4" curley tail grub (candy corn) tipped with a fish bite
when something hit my lure , jumped twice and away it went, it was a very large tarpon, between 5-6 feet, I fought it for over 2 hours before
my line broke. The most exciting day yet for me. Only wish I could have landed it to take some pictures. My wife took several pictures however the only one was a tail shot as it was going back down.
Too large a fish for a 7' rod with a stratic reel. Need to have it serviced now. it took a beating.
:D

Who knew losing a fish could be so much fun! Hope I get to lose one sometime. Sorry you didn't get a picture but I'm sure you'll remember it for long long time.

Pops, good job! Just hanging on to a tarpon for 2 hours is a great deal. I have never had one on for more than 15 seconds before losing it. What a story! Once again, good job! I would trade 10 good fishing days for a story like that of my own. Just curious, what kind of gear did you have (line, rod, leader, and reel size) if you don't mind me asking?
