West Goose Creek 8/17

Post by Charles »

Rode a bike, actually just for grins I took the wife's bike today, to Wakulla Beach. Left the house at noon, fishing West Goose Creek by one hoping on the high tide I could maybe catch some trout and reds up along the edge of the grass working on the finger mullet. Nothing; nada; zilch; big, fat, fuzzy, zero; working top-water and subsurface plugs. Maybe a live finger mullet would have worked, I don't know. There's plenty of them around in there, but I had the wrong castnet. Spoke with a fellow in a kayak. He had caught one undersize red. Pretty windy around there this afternoon. I gave it up about 4:30. Left thinking that was the time I should have got there.

The water is definately clearing up. I guess it's never really clear back there this time of year, but at least it's not the color of warm Coca-Cola any more.

Lesson re-learned: The mostest blue-crab catchingest thing in the world is a castnet, the newer the better. Think I'll go around there with just the castnet and a couple five gallon buckets one day. I bet I limit out in about an hour. Okay, a couple hours counting shaking them out of the net. Not much size to the ones I've been seeing, but probably just right to a slot length red.

sounds like you enjoyed yourself even if the fish didn't cooperate.

I fish for the challenge. If I caught fish every time I went, I'd get bored. You need a few of those off days in there to make you appreciate the good ones. Hang in there, Charles.
What was I supposed to do today?

I fished Wakulla Beach from first light until about 11:30 again today. I'm with you though, think I'll fish the evening till dark next time I go. Paddled about 8 miles today for not even a single fish. Glad to see I'm not the only one that didn't catch fish though. Wind was beginning to pick up right as I was leaving, and some wind really helps the fishing around that area. Lots of large eating size blue crabs on the oyster mound off the Southwest point of Patty's Island. Lots of huge mullet early around East Goose Creek. Won't get to fish that area again till late next week. Heading home for a few days, but will be offshore out of Destin for two of them.

CP -
Good reports! It's nice to see wade fishing reports from Wakulla Beach again. I fished that area pretty regularly in the Spring from shore and from canoe and got pretty attached to it. Everytime you'll see something different down there - between deer, hogs, snakes and bobcats on the road; to fish, sharks, gators, dolphins, eagles and skimmers down at the water.

Good luck and keep up the reports!

Good job of reporting Charles, and you to Nathan. I appreciate hearing about your outing even if you didn't hook up with a bunch of fish. Very good read. Thanks.
