Stopped to catch bait, then went to first spot, in 45'. Lots of shorts, no legals. On to spot two, this was in 53', nothing but a couple of shorts. Getting hot, so begain to troll and look for some new spots. Found a nice looking one, and decided to do a "squid check" to see if it had anything on it. Bite immediately, a just under red snapper. Hmmm, gonna anchor.
Well anchoring was a real pain, with the wind and tide doing different things. Anyway, finally got near the buoy, and lost a couple of really nice somethings right away. Then, I dropped down a half an Ly, and boom! Drag running out with a thump, thump, line coming up, yowsah, cobia breaking water! And a nice one!
Round and round I go, getting hotter and just about giving out. The cobia had four friends with her, but she was the biggest. All looked legal. My arms started cramping and fingers too, but I managed to ease her to the gaff after about 15 minutes or so of uhh, and ugg, and Jeezu! Into the boat, not too green, and a couple of wacks with the stick just for the heck of it.
I was stove up. Had to sit down and drink a quart of water and rest for a few minutes before I could half fit her into the fish box. Stuck out about a foot. I measured, and she was 42" to the fork, and I estimated maybe 35-40 lbs. Took me a while, but I pulled in the anchor and the buoy, then drank another quart of water before heading in. I had forgotten my camera at home.
Once on plane, wind felt good. Lots of small bait at the surface balling up and getting really slammed by macks and bonito. At the ramp at 1:00p.m., thunderboomer hit and soaked me to the skin while I was unloading.
Took a picture at the house, although nothing is as good as fresh in the boat pictures. Hot day, but hey, its August!
Luck,
EJ
