A friend and I launched from the Lighthouse at daylight this morning 30 minutes behind Tin Can and Sir Reel and 5 minutes ahead of Slow Reel. We headed east to fish the creeks as best we could on a falling tide. Started fishing in Stoney Bayou. Due to the stiff breeze, we decided to motor up the creeks and let the wind blow us back down. Not long after we killed the motor, my partner has the 1st redfish in the box. Shortly thereafter he has 2 nice trout in the box. The pressure's on and he's starting to talk a little smack.
We drift out of Stoney Bayou and head up a creek to the east of Palmetto Island. About a minute after cutting the motor I have a red follow my spoon to the boat. He doesn't spook so I flip my spoon past him. As I bring it by him again, he swallows it. He heads away from me as I set the hook like a BASS Master Champion. Snap! The reds swims away with my spoon and leaves me feeling like an idiot. I knew better than to set the hook so hard when he was so close.
So now I'm really feeling the pressure and my partner proceeds to put another red in the boat. Man , its not my day. We see another 4-5 reds drifting down the creek, but by this time the tide is so low the reds are way spooky.
We drift on out onto the flats outside the creek mouth and begin throwing topwater baits in 1' water. In back to back casts, I put 2 really nice trout in the box. I'm feeling somewhat redeemed though still smarting from the redfish butt whipping from my partner. We didn't see another redfish the rest of the morning.
Motored out to Grey Mare and cast around the rocks a little with no success. Decided to pack it in. Ended the day with 2 reds to 23" and 4 trout to 22". Back on the trailer by 1:15 p.m.
Ran into Tin Can and got to meet Sir Reel. It was a real pleasure to meet you, Sir Reel. Its nice to finally put faces with some of the names on the forum.
Had a great time considering the wind and the falling tide. Can't wait until next time.
