Grass on Grubs

Post by Doublehooks »

When grub fishing grass frequently gets on the hook. Does anybody know what effect this has on fish. Will trout, reds or flounder still hit the grub? Also any suggestions on how to not get grass on hook.

I believe that fish will shy away from a lure, that has grass on the hooks.

Where loose weed is a problem, I use a hook guard which can help.
These are fitted on some lures, but its easy to tie your own, using a heavy breaking strain mono on the shank of the hook.

I also bought some of these on a recent visit there, I find they work well.

No, They won't hit a plug fouled with grass. :( If floating grass is a problem, sometimes you can move the boat and get out of some grass. Make sure to clean the plug off if you get grass. :smt004

A little grass on a lure causes action killing drag. I don't think it's quite as important with jigs.

In fact, an effective way to fish a jig for trout is to cast behind the boat as you're drifting and let the jig fall into the grass. Hold the rod still and notice how it loads up as the boat continues to drift. When the load on the rod overcomes the strength of the grass the jig will tear free and suddenly SPROING out above the grass, pause, and fall back into the grass. A lot like a shrimp or some other small, yummy thing trying to escape a big, bad predator. Trout will nail a jig that does this on the pause or fall.
