A unique website dedicated to fishing information from Florida's Northern Big Bend. This includes the area from the Econfina River west to the Apalachicola River
Four Football coaches bringing their 8-9 year old sons down for three days of fishing. Got our own boats and staying at the Sea Hag Marina. Any pointers? Go out and bottom fish or fish the flats? Leaving Sunday, Sept. 11th (my wedding anniversary, how the heck did I get away with that?), fishing Mon-Wed
Got cast nets, crab baskets, etc. Figure we'll try everything and hope the boys have a blast and catch fish to boot. What bait selections work best in the area this time of year? We've got light tackle and big terminal tackle so can adapt to all. . . or at least I think we can.
I haven’t fished out of that location in a long time but as far as general information the same gear and bait/lures that work up here would work there as well. So, for the flats use your light tackle…. 8-12 lb test line (only a general range) with a short floro carbon leader in say 20lb test if your using top water or suspended type lures. If your using Cajun Thunders(CT) with either live bait or jigs, I’d use a 20lb leader below the CT. Use a ¼ or 3/8 ounce jig head. Check out some of the “inshoreâ€

Freespoolin' from one little league coach to another.
Inshore find the grass in 4-6 ft try grubs under Cajun thunders this is almost foolproof for just catching some trout. If you have the means to get Pinfish then this is your best bet for a limit of nice keeper trout. Use a little deeper leader and possbly a little deeper water. 6-10 ft.
If you want to go out a little farther and put the kids on some fish, go out to a least 30 ft. and drift and bottom fish with some cutbait and you should be able to catch plenty of grunts. This should keep the boys busy.
I haven't fished down there before - it's a good bit further from my preferred hunting grounds. But I did put in at Steinhatchee yesturday in our work boat and cruise about 50 miles up and down the coast between Rocky Creek and Hagens Cove. We were mostly about 2 miles offshore the entire time and it looks like there are LOTS of good fishing spots around there. Plenty of great grass to chase trout and some really nice looking bars a few miles to the west of the Steinhatchee entrance. I would imagine that any holes or cuts around those bars would be productive. Water clarity varied considerably. Around those bars to the west it was VERY clear, but further west near Hagens Cove it was much darker. Just need to look around a bit. If you're hunting trout, I'd try a Cajun Thunder over some grass. Vary your depth until you find 'em.
Yesturday the wind was pretty fierce and the weather in that area can get real rough - real fast. I've heard of too many accidents in that region of the Big Bend. Good luck and be careful out there.
