Wewahitchka 9/10

Post by tin can »

Sir Reel and I headed to Wewahitchka at 0430 yesterday morning for a little sweetwater fishin on the Apalachicola River. For the first time this year the daylight run was cold. It felt good.

We ran up the river to a favorite place of mine in search of a bass. I have a tournament over there in 2 weeks, and needed to check my spots. We stayed too long in the trees with no action. I finally caught one bass in there. Moved out onto the river and picked up one or two more. Ran back down the river and through the cutoff to the Chipola river to check a couple of spots over there. Picked up a couple more fish. On our way back in we ran across an older couple with motor troubles. Towed them back to the landing. Put it on the trailer about 3 o'clock.

It was not a banner catching day, but a very pleasant day with good company.

Well I intended to get this online yesterday but had a problem with load'n pictures. I received a call from TC on Friday with an offer I couldn’t refuse. He needed to do some prospecting for an up coming freshwater tournament in a couple of weeks and wanted to know if I’d be interested in going along. I’d never fished the Apalachicola before so I said absolutely! We put in at the landing in Wewahitchka and were on the river by 7:15. I won’t say exactly where we fished in case TC doesn’t want the location out just yet. Now I’ve fished rivers in the mid west and taken float trips before but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything that could compare to this experience. The scenery was really something. Fishing in around the cypress trees, slip’n the bank, having the view change by the minute, it was something I’m glad I was able to experience. The fishing was tough but TC did manage to find a couple of spots where hopefully the fish will still be hanging out in a couple of weeks. We brought 3 or 4 into the boat and had that many more break off or get off at the boat. Since we weren’t interested in keeping them, it didn’t matter if we boated them or not and we released all that came into the boat. One thing that impressed me was the quality and condition of the fish we caught. They were absolute pigs. Very chunky and fat. I want to thank TC for allowing me to hold down the back of the boat. It was a great experience; I was able to practice some old skills that sure do need some work. I was amazed at the squatters (for lack of a better term) who have constructed floating shacks on steel barges or pontoons. No way to get to them except by water. Some of them are real nice. TC and I passed one especially nice one that had a for sale sign on it. We both agreed that it would be a real good investment for the Club to purchase it for meetings and activities. Here’s a couple of pictures with one close enough to read the phone number in case any of you members who are among the more well-to-do want to jump on it (you know who you are!). TC I hope you have a successful tournament and thanks for the day, I really enjoyed it.

Folks, that is a full blown stucco house built on a barge.
