St. Joe Bay - 10/08/05

Post by Chalk »

Well, since Birddog won’t post the fishing report…I guess I’ll have to tell the lies….

Met up with Birddog and Hunter (Birddog Jr.) at Beacon Hill and we headed to Presnell’s around 1230….The cloud cover was gone and the sun was out and we were itching in anticipation of what the afternoon’s catch might be.

We launched and headed over to where myself and Tincan caught a few trout the weekend before…We landed a few trout…Then headed to the back of the bay…Picked up a trout here and there….Saw some huge stingrays and sharks that had Hunters attention…

I tied on a Cajun Thunder and started throwing it….saw the cork go under and set the hook and landed the fish….Leader breaks….I open the trout’s mouth to retrieve my jig and all I could see was the eyelet poking out the trout’s throat….Talk about inhaling your lunch….It was a keeper and I threw it in the box…I want that jig back, Birddog

Now when we were in fish they were nailing the lures, biting fairly aggressive…We move over toward the west side of the bay…Set up a drift over some sand spots…We see in the neighborhood of 15 reds and one trout that was as long as my leg :o ….We drifted over the top of these fish before they spooked and we threw to them and they wouldn’t eat….I always say reds will eat if you throw to them and you have not spooked them….We should of caught at least one of these fish in this spot, but we didn’t….We later speculated it was red tide (making the fish feel sick) or they had been fished hard by another boat earlier.

We leave there a little discouraged and head to a trout hole in the middle grounds…I think it was the second cast I lock into a good one…. This fish is thick, first glance you think 20 plus based off the thickness, but it was only 19 inches, definitely a good tournament trout…

We ended up making a few drifts and picking a few more trout, lady fish and a Jack Crevalle….Saw what looked to be a school of big jack crevalles or bluefish, but they wouldn’t eat…

We head to the redfish hole for the last 15 minutes (turned into 30 minutes)….I tried them dang spoons again, but it was to shallow and grassy….I persuaded Birddog to try a spinner bait and dang if he didn’t land our only keeper red….

Great way to end the day, we pack it in….Ended up with 6 trout to 19 inches, one redfish…Caught on jerk baits, Cajun Thunder, straight jigs and spinner baits.

Had a blast Birddog thanks for the invite, can’t wait to do it again…

I talked with Eckley today and he agreed it probably was red tide that had those reds acting so odd.

"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".
