St.George 10/9 - Newbs finally score!

Went down with a friend of mine on Saturday night after the FSU game so we could get an early start Sunday. Left the house at about 6:45 and decided to launch in the middle of the island as the ramp at the Cut is just too messy with all the sand from recent storms. Hit the water no problem, stopped off for some pinfish. Got about 25 or so in about 30-45 minutes, kinda slow going on them. Saw some nice fish on the surface, but no time for that, we were heading offshore! Went straight out to the spot we caught a few shorts (no keepers) on last month, and set up shop. First drop, a almost-legal gag...doh! Second drop, nice gag, and it continued like that, FINALLY! Ended up with 4 nice keepers between the 2 of us before we ran out of live pinfish. Released about 12 or so. Then all we had left was dead ones, so we cut them up a bit and the red snapper bite was on. 5 nice ones in the chest, and a trigger on the last, tiny piece of pinfish we had. No reds today though. Back in by noon on smoooooooth waters to cap off a great day. Everyone I know has been eating fish for 2 days...

Hi Coach,
I'm interested in exactly where you put in. I have a friend who lives on the island, and he wants to fish; but I have no idea where to access the gulf side with the cut's current condition.

The east side of the bridge where it hits the island is the only spot on the island other than the ramp in the state park and the one at the cut. You will see a bunch of oyster boats there. Its more like some dirt that goes into the water, but the launch is totally protected, and has a good slope to it. It is about 2 1/2-3ft at low tide where you launch, but be careful on the way out to the bay, it gets VERY shallow at low tide. It was about 1ft on our way back in, and my motor was about out of the water just to keep moving, but we didn't get stuck. My boat is a 19' Wellcraft CC with what I would guess is normal draft. Oh, I saw a front loader parked at the ramp at the cut on the way back in, so hopefully they are fixing it up.

And yes, we are fairly addicted now! Hope to head back down in a few weeks after the Maryland game.
