Cold and Windy St. Marks 10-22
Finally got a chance to go after a two month pause in my fishing. Took my two boys, 12 and 6, out of the lighthouse about 7:30. Left in the dark headed for east flats and Greymare. Started first drift right as daylight broke. It was cold and windy, as predicted, but the water temp was holding about 75 degrees. Connected on first cast with a 2 1/2 foot gar. Proceeded to catch short trout, lizard fish, sharks, catfish, and a cold. We did manage to put 8 keeper trout in the icebox, but all were in the 16 to 18 inch class. Fished in 2 to 5 feet primarily with SWA (various colors) with and without CT. Although this was not the best weather or the most abundant catches we have made, it sure felt good to get back out on the flats with the boys. They were very impressed with the toothy critters anyway. Thanks to all here for the continued updates that allow me to find some fish even after a long absence from the action. I just have to read the reports and it keeps me up to date.

Sunday was the same way...
I got a chance to take my boys 8, 7, nearly 4 and my better half out for the first time in about 2 months (since Katrina...)
I was COLD but we had a great time.
My 7 y/o had an incredible battle with the biggest trout
anyone in our family ever caught. About half way through the fight the reel came off the rod (dad (yours truly) to the rescue). The Gator almost tangled the line in the motor (dad to the rescue). My son finally got the Gator to the side of the boat and it almost jumped into the boat all be itself. Unfortunately, it didn't and dad grabbed the line to pull it into the boat and broke the line (dad the goat...)
All those life lessons about perspective and such - well on this day the student became the teacher as I almost lost my mind after blowing that for my little man.
After a moment of silence my little guy sat down on the back of the boat and said: "Dad don't worry - that just means he'll be bigger next year when we catch him."

After all the activity to get the fish into a position we could land it from I didn't think about the net which was only about three feet away...
Interestingly enough, when the line broke the fish just sat there for a second so I reached in and got my hand on it but couldn't pull it out. Once it felt my hand it was gone in a flash. Then my shirt was wet to the elbow in that cold wind.....
