Redfish Bonanza

Post by pennfish »

I dropped the kids off at school yesterday, and then decided to go to oyster bay to fish the low tide where I slayed the trout last week. when i got there and netted about 100 shrimp and took off for the spot with a jon boat and trolling motor, one rod rigged with a cajun cork with a led head hanging 8in. below for shrimp and the other with a chug bug. When I got to the oyster bars where the hole is I ancored up and started checking out the area, right off I noticed two nice schools of reds working shrimp. I polled over to intercept, the depth is only 18 to 24 in. and sometimes only 6in. but the fish were in the deeper spots. I landed 6 reds on the chug bug befor the school broke up and spread out, one time about 6 fish followed the plug with in 5 ft. of the boat, at that point im almost laying in the bottom of the boat so they wont see me, I stopped the plug as they swam around it BAM one nails it and reds go everywhere :smt007 once the fish scatter and spread out , I settle in the deepest spot and start fishing with the cork and jig head with a whole shrimp. To sum it up I released between 30 to 40 reds in a 3 hr. period, no fish were under 20in. and the biggest were 8lb on the boga grip. Had one fish eat my cork and I think he swallowed it because it never popped back up :o . I had to be very quiet, the fish didnt mind the hooked ones thrashing in the water just dont bang the boat  so all were released while still in the water and I didnt gut hook a single one because I set the hook early. This was the best redfishing I have ever done, I wish some one would of been there to enjoy it with me and also be a witness to that madness. Next week will be good tides so dont miss them, and as long as the shrimp are running like they are fishing should continue going strong

The fella that told me about some of the spots and how to fish them went tues. same spot and same bait , he only managed 1 red and 1 trout. The only solution to the fishing game is to go as often as possible, atleast thats what I tell my wife :-D
