Yes....If you have the time, tools and a covered area to work on it, it's more productive than golf, better than drinking, safer than sex
....But it's a boat, a wood boat, don't expect much resale value, unless you find an educated buyer....
Stevespringfields isn't the first one built just the most documented...A teacher in Live Oak (dovewood on bateau2.com) built the first one...
Some pictures of Dovewoods

Nobody in the boat but look at that draft....maybe an inch

Unless I find a good offshore boat to redo, the XF20 will probably be my next big adventure....

I want to put in a sole and front and rear casting decks and walk around gunnels like a flats boat. Might increase the draft some but from what you just showed me another inch won't really hurt.
I am looking for a heated warehouse for my construction business anyway. Found several that would be just perfect, about 2000 sq ft, to put in a small woodworking shop and build the boat but here in Albany they are all rented out. Still looking.
I'm going to blackmail one of my trim crews into helping me with the wookworking. Next I need to find someone with fiberglass experience. Two people can work a lot faster than one.
As far a resale that isn't important. My 21' bay boat has too much draft for the Aucilla, Econfina, rock gardens and all those creeks in between St. Marks and Rock Island. I had a 16' hells bay that worked well there but it was too nice a boat to be bouncing off the rocks and oyster bars. I want something that I won't mind beating up. Double up the glass on the bottom and put that graphite and epoxy on and see how it holds up.
Looking a the 60 hp yamaha jet for power. Thats only 40 hp but it should be enough. Want to keep weight to a minimum. I'm not going to be making long runs anyway.
Tell me what you think. Thats my winter boat project. Hope it will be ready by spring but that is probably optimistic.

RC - I think they are changing the plans to use one layer of 1200 and one layer of 1708 Biaxial....I believe Hunch did his boat like your describing as well as the originator of the boat Capt. Billy Henderson
Your right on the money with the jet..It'll do 25 mph with a 25 hp....I don't think I could control myself or the boat with a 40 on it...Unless your a custom to power sliding through them curves with a flat bottom boat at 40 mph
Remember the rule for building plywood boats....You can buy $20.00 plywood and spend another $40.00 in fiberglass and resin or you can buy $40.00 plywood and $20.00 in fiberglass and resin and alot less sanding.
Go for it, do it right and enjoy the process....Reason I have not finished mine is I got another boat, my tournament fishing partner is high maintenance, pool, work, kids, yard....But I did work on it this weekend, the inside is ready for glassing...

RC,
If you have any questions I'd be happy to help as much as I can. I can at least tell you all the mistakes I made and that would hopefully make life easier on you. It took me a little over a year to build and that is pretty much every saturday and holiday. As much as the wife would allow at least. I put a sole and casting decks on mine and with a 40 it will do about 23-25 mph. It drafts around 4".

Thanks for the offer of help FishinFreak. I will be taking you up on that. Saving your email address. I would like to keep everyone posted on the progress like Chalk but I'll save those dumb questions for the email.
Chalk I have enjoyed your building post. Keep it up.
Looks like you can take a good natured ribbing by your fishing buddies well too.

Yes I am going to use the Meranti BS 1088. I am trying to buy the plywood through my lumber supplier. As much money as I spend with those folks every month they ought to give it to me.
I really haven't decided which epoxy to use. From your experience is the extra cost of the more expensive resin worth it.
Yes Hunch's boat is really what I want mine to look like. I just don't want to mess up that shallow draft with too much weight. I want to be able to bounce over those rocks like springhillsteve.
Every since I started fishing the econfina about 5 years ago I have been thinking about what kind of boat would work best.
I looked at those aluminum boats they build in perry and they had a good design but I just don't really like aluminum boats. Seems like I am always stubbing my toes in them. That aluminum is hard!
I wanted a tunnel to get that lower unit up away from the rocks. I always thought a jet would work good to. I've sent a lot of props to the prop shop.
I hear that grass is a problem with a jet. Really the time of year that we fish creeks and shallow water we don't have a lot of grass. By the time the grass starts to grow in the spring the fish have moved out where I can get at them with my bay boat. Any way I'm going to try the jet and see what happens.
As far as the power if I remember correctly you plan to overpower your boat and turn it into a skipping rock. Underpowered boats are no fun.
I've had a polar 1780 and am well familiar with the skid turn. Used to live in Jax and fished a lot of crooked creeks. Believe me when I first got that boat I about skidded up on the bank a bunch of times. You have to slow down and trim down on the curves and allow for the slide. Kind of fun once you get the hang of it but it will surprise you every now and then.
Anyway I'm off to find a place to build my boat. See ya'll later.

Meranti BS 6566 is a cheaper alternative...price it against houstonhardwoods.com and boatbuildercentral.com, I have bought from both, the latter being the better plywood
USComposites.com has the best price on epoxy, but boatbuildercentral.com has the best price on biaxial cloth and their Marinepoxy is comparable in price, throw in shipping and the latter is the better deal since they have everything you need...
I am only overpowering by 5 hp....
