Fished Sat. morning with my 9 yr. old daughter Shelby. Great weather but few fish. Trolled first and picked up a 27" gag in 35' on a red/white stretch 30, then a 9" rock bass hit the same lure. Around 9:00 Shelby boated her first grouper by herself, to bad it was only a 19" red. The bite stopped for us around 10:00 but it was a fun day with a great fishing partner. Only bites we had besides trolling were on LY's. We'll be back out as soon as seas permit.
Ya'll have a wonderful Christmas and I hope Santa brings everything you need.
Joel,
I'm glad to see that the fish did not grow from Saturday to Sunday. Mine usually grow at least a little bit each day. Take care, talk to you soon.
Question for you guys....What is a good age to start the kids at? I have a 5 yr old girl and I have wanting to take her but I think she may be to young still. What do ya'll think?
Put a simple rod and reel rig in her hands, help her with it, and let her catch a bunch of seabass, or , in the spring, give her a bream buster and let her catch pinfish. At that age she doesn't care what's on the other end of the line. Set her up with something fun, now. Chances are you'll have a fishin partner for many years.
That's a good idea. I know she'd love to catch pinfish in the spring. Seabass would keep her busy too. Good idea. She would probably be less prone to get seasick at a young age too.
I guess the main thing at a young age is to make it fun. Keep the trip short and active. Even if the fish are biting my 6 yr. old gets bored. During the summer we will make a trip to a beach so they can play for a while. My 9 yr. old can last a little longer and as she gets older our trips will get longer but I'll let her make that call, I don't want to turn her off.
