Wakulla River 12/18

Post by Charles »

Wimped out and took the car this morning. Left at 5:45 with the canoe in tow on the utility trailer and the nagging feeling something got left behind. Got to Lower Bridge Ramp and began prepping for launch. "Where is my paddle?" "With the spare paddle, still sitting in the livingroom." :smt013

Back to the house. Good thing I didn't decide to go to Wacissa this morning.

On the way back to the ramp saw four deer in a cleared area beside the road. Launched and didn't notice that I almost ripped the tag off the trailer in the hole at the top of the ramp driving up to park.

Didn't fish at all on the way down river. I was kind of in a hurry, now. Flushed two little bunches of ducks on the way down to where I wanted to go. Still too dark to see what they were. Got where I wanted to be and found out I had to set my gang rig a lot closer to the bank, and blind, than I wanted to because of the way the channel cuts in close on the east bank of the river right through there.

Gang rig of bluebills here, a few scattered bluebills there, the woodies over there, pull the boat in right next to this deadfall, drag out the cami net and spread it over everything, then hunker down and wait. And wait. And wait. Two hours later with two buffleheads in the bag I decided jump shooting from the canoe was more productive and would warm me up. Nothing much at all really flew. Caught and released a couple keeper bass while I was waiting.

Didn't see any coots at all. Did see an eagle several times cruising around. Fished on down to Big Boggy. There's always a bunch of coots hanging out at that corner across from Big Boggy, but not today. Fished and jump shot ducks back up to the ramp.

Loading up I bumped the tag on the trailer just a little bit with my leg. That little bit was enough to knock it completely off with a broken mount. Something else to fix. Glad it fell off on the ramp, though, rather than on the road.

Finished the day with a pair of bluebills and three buffleheads. An even dozen bass learned yellow Snagless Sallys are not food, all released. The decoys floated just dandy. :-D
