Aucilla River 12-19-05

Post by Fisherman989 »

The party could be over before it started at Aucilla. Two groups of us were there yesterday. Cold all day. My boat didn't see the first trout all day. The dependable red's that have been there for the past month were AWOL too. Not a red cought where we have been catching upwards of 25-35 per trip.
Dixie Reb did get one squeker trout that went 15 1/2 inches.
Sheephead were the order of the day. Caught about 30 in my boat. Could only keep 2 because of the 12 in. size limit. Hard to throw a 10-11 in. sheephead back...but we did. Looked like we were on a bream bed catching pound size bream. Managed to catch 4 speckled cats above the island on shrimp.
Here's over 30 years experence on the Aucilla in mid to late December. When this happens the trout fishing is usually over for the year. (1)gars wallowring way below the island (2) fresh water down to Sugar Bear (below the island) (3) no trout or red's caught (4) freshwater catfish caught around the island..north and south.
Could be wrong??????Could be the wrong part of the moon. Makes for poor fishing though. :(

Picked up boat from Mikes and fished East River this afternoon and did nada, zip. Now, that is not my normal stompin grounds, but with so little water that was the option. Several boats at Shields had the same experience all day, grouper or inshore, slow. Thinkin the high pressure was to blame.

At least the ducks are good!

With all the rain we have had the freshwater will keep them out of the rivers. Trout can not tolerate as much freshwater as redfish. Also, from reports in the past few years there has been a rather low number of trout coming up the rivers in the winter than years past.

Leonreno.....from someone who has been there every year...few if any trout has come into the Aucilla River for the past 4-5 years during the winter. It used to be fabulous...now it's a bust...almost. Predictions for this year was...probably...going to be pretty good. Then all the rains came. There's water all out in the woods...for miles from the river...and along the roads....and almost no trout....again.
